WAN News – Procession a Great Success!
Sunday, July 13th, 2008Moving Tides Procession at Spirit of the Sea Festival
The ‘Moving Tides’ procession (part of the Spirit of the Sea Festival) was a great success. This colourful spectacle with a sea theme was a collaboration between Kinetica, commisioned local artists, members of Weymouth Arts Network, youngsters from the local area and Weymouth College. The first section of the procession was designed by two local artists, built and exhibited with the help of various volunteers including Weymouth Arts Network members, pupils from local schools and visiting Spanish language students. The procession was lead by two giant puppets; Queen Elizabeth II and King Phillip of Spain (designed by Sarah Butterworth) reflecting an ‘Armada’ theme, plus participants wore hats in the shape of English and Spanish galleons (designed by Maggie Foottit), carrying paper sea gulls and sea waves . The rest of the procession was designed and co-ordinated by ‘Kinetica’ who specialise in carnival workshops again assisted by children from local schools, with a mixture of colourful costumes and various musical instruments. The procession danced its way to the town clock via the sea front at Greenhill. From here it took its position on the Esplanade road, making its way along the harbourside to Brewers Quay, to the delight of an appreciative audience and passers by. The whole event lit up Weymouth with a spectacle of vivid colour, music and exhuberance. Press coverage here. Dorset Echo Letters. Echo Photographs.

Volunteers Needed for Spirit of Sea Procession
Wednesday, June 25th, 2008Request from Allan Rogers (Arts Develpment Officer, Weymouth & Portland)
From 8th-11th July ‘Kinetika’ (& Weymouth Arts Network people 23rd – 27th June… Ed), will be working at Weymouth College with 400-800 Yr 6 children from Chesil Partnership primary schools to make costumes, music and dance around the “Spirit of The Sea” theme. Their work will culminate in the ‘Moving Tides’ procession, taking place on Saturday 12th July at 6pm from the Jubilee Clock (Weymouth Seafront) to Brewers Quay in Hope Square. 45 secondary school children from an ‘Aim Higher’ project will also be joining the procession. Further info http://www.spiritofthesea.org.uk/ It is hoped that some of these children will also form a carnival troupe to take part in the Weymouth Carnival, which takes place on Wednesday August 20 on Weymouth Esplanade at 6pm http://www.weymouthcarnival.co.uk/ . Kinetika held a design and development weekend at Weymouth College on May 10 and 11 to inspire and teach basic backpack and batik techniques to carnival groups from all over Dorset, which was felt to be a very successful workshop by all involved.
WHAT WE NEED
We need volunteers to accompany and steward the children on the procession itself. Volunteers meet in Weymouth College at 5.00pm Saturday 12 July. Car parking is available. The procession is due to finish at 7.00pm in Hope Square, so the total time involved is 2/3 hours.
CONTACT
If you are able to volunteer for this opportunity and be involved in this wonderful celebration, please contact Sarah Colwell sarah_colwell@weymouth.ac.uk tel: 01305 208714 as soon as possible, as we need to know the number of volunteers who can commit.
