Moving Tides Procession

Come see the Spirit of the Sea ‘Moving Tides Procession’.  A colourful spectacle with a sea theme. A collaboration between Kinetica, local commisioned artists, members of Weymouth Arts Network, youngsters from the local area and Weymouth College.  6pm, Saturday 12th July (today!) from Weymouth Esplanade and ending at Brewers Quay.  Come join the fun! Spirit of The Sea – Maritime Festival

Weymouth & Portland. 5th to 13th July 2008. Celebrating the area’s close relationship with the sea, the festival brings together a range of sporting activities, cultural events and entertainment – all on a maritime theme. http://www.spiritofthesea.org.uk

Cultural / creative events include :

‘Moving Tide’ Procession -  6pm, Saturday 12 July.  Weymouth Esplanade, finishing at Hope Square, Weymouth.  Children’s procession on Weymouth seafront. 800 children will be making costumes, carnival figures, music and dance around the “Spirit of The Sea” theme.

Weymouth ‘Beach Live’ Live - Saturday 5th until Sunday 13th July. Weymouth Seafront. Live music on stage on the beach everyday. Weekends : 2pm till 10pm, weekdays : 6pm till 10pm. (Stage on beach opposite Alexandra Gardens).

Art in the Park’ - Saturday 12th July. Easton Gardens and Easton Methodist Hall, Portland. Art in the Park’ is a new Royal manor workshops (RMW) annual summer event in conjunction with W&PBC as part of the Spirit of the Sea Festival. The event is to provide a focal point and awareness of local arts and crafts on the island and the Royal manor of Portland. Island Voices - Sunday 13th July. Brakenbury Infants School, Portland. ‘Island Voices Community Choir’ and the ‘Chesil Cove Children’s Choir’ will be performing.

Sonata & Sculpture in Easton Square

Thursday, July 3rd, 2008

Performance by Duncan Honeybourne (pianist). Includes the first performance of a sonata by composer Sonja Grossner.

ALSO : Sculpture will be on display by the late German sculpture Margarete Klopfleisch (mother of Grossner).

3pm, Sunday 6th July. All Saints Church, Easton, Portland.

Admission free & a collection will be taken for the church organ restoration fund. Tea & cakes available afterwards at Whitestone Cafe Gallery.

May Micro Festival Portland 2008 (Sculpture)

The project to commemorate the world’s extinct species. 3 extraordinary artworks will be created at the Micro Festival: All events are free of charge.

- A ‘Stone Circle’ bearing the images of extinct and nearly extinct creatures to be carved by sculptors Glynn Williams, Harry Brockway, Tim Lees, John Sellman, Gillian Forbes and Gareth Newman.

-To be carved by the public, Unique Tessellations by Peter Randall-Page, creator of the extraordinary Seed sculpture at the Eden Project (no experience needed). Supervision led by Roy Pepperell, Joanna Szuwalska, Sebastian Brooke, Anthony Denman and Paul Lister.

-The ‘forerunner’ MEMO bell to be tolled for extinct species, sculpted by Marcus Vergette & cast at the festival by Andy Griffiths. Paul Hyland will be the Micro festival writer-in-residence.

Saturday 17 May 9am-5pm : Sculptors carving the stone circle (all welcome to help carve, no experience necessary).

Saturday 17 May 5pm : Pouring The Bell.

Sunday 18 May 9am – 5pm : Sculptors carving the stone circle (all welcome).

Thursday 22 May 8am : International Day Of Biodiversity. Tolling the bell for extinct species.
